Peppermint as a Spider Repellent – My Spidey Senses are Tingling…with Freshness
We live near some woods, so every time I go to check the mail, I get a slight case of arachnophobia. I don’t know if they are living in there, or they use it as a super highway, but I have seen spiders of all shapes, colors and sizes in there. Some have even had hairier legs than this chick:
I keep thinking something like this might happen to me, just because I’m going out there to check whether I may already be a winner.
But even when I didn’t see them, I saw evidence of them.
Which makes me feel like this:
So, when I saw a claim on the boards that you could use peppermint to repel them, I thought it might be worth a try. The claim said you could mix the peppermint with water and give it a few squirts, but I figured that the straight stuff would be more potent, so I just shook the bottle on and inside of the mailbox, applying drops of the oil quite liberally.
The next day I went out to get the mail, but I have to say, the peppermint did very little to deter the spiders from hanging out there.
Oh, well…where was I? Oh, yeah….

I havnt heard that peppermint works, but that any kind of citrus oil does the trick. We get those ugly brown house spiders that make me scream like a small child and while I found a lot of “recipes” including a bunch of weird stuff I have never heard of, let alone have no idea where I’d purchase said items…I found a post saying that any kind of cleaning product (namely furniture polish as it need not be cleaned off after application) with actual citrus oil (not just the scent) will work well too. The only drawback is that it needs to be reapplied as its not a permanent solution.
Thanks! I will try that. As it is, none of the kids will go out to get the mail any more. 🙂
