Homemade Copycat McDonald’s Shamrock Shake – It’s Not the Only Thing That Will Be Green

This time of year, I find myself continually throwing a green monkey off my back. I mean, if I could justify the caloric content, I would probably drive through at McDonald’s at least once a week for a Shamrock Shake. Those things are tasty. I admit they are no more Irish than Brad Pitt in The Devil’s Own, but there’s something about them that calls to me in the weeks before St. Patrick’s Day.

So I thought it might be fun to try to make some Shamrock Shakes at home, using a recipe that I found on the boards. The photo on Pinterest looks like this:

Ingredients:

3 cups good quality vanilla ice cream
1 3/4 cups 1% milk
1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
Green food coloring, if desired

1. Blend all ingredients in a blender until completely thick and smooth. Pour into glasses and serve!

So, I got some ice cream,

and added the milk to it. I used skim milk because that’s all we had in the house.

Then I put in the peppermint extract and the green food coloring…

…and blended.

But something was missing. Maybe it was vanilla, or maybe it was some secret chemical that McDonald’s puts in there, but overall, the shakes weren’t as good as the ones from the chain. They weren’t as airy either. Bottom line, I guess, is that if you want to get your Shamrock Shake on, you’ve got to head to the drive-thru.
